Since we went to Florence during the summer, we missed tasting the classic roasted chestnuts served warm from local carts on street corners.
So this Christmas we decided to add another tradition to our holiday season by roasting chestnuts in our toaster oven.
Below is a recipe I put together for sweet and spicy chestnuts made right in your kitchen.
1 lb of chestnuts
2 tablespoons of salted butter
2 teaspoons of dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon of chili powder
Preheat Oven/Toaster Oven to 400
First I split the chestnuts open with a horizontal line using a serrated bread knife and then I soak them in hot water for 10 minutes. Remove them from the water and place in foil in one layer, leaving the foil open at the top for steam to escape.
Melt the butter and stir in the chili powder and dark brown sugar. Pour over chestnuts and toss to coat.
Roast for 20-25 minutes or until the shells are starting to pull away from the chestnuts.
