Grapes Don't Grow in Ugly Places

If you haven’t guessed already, Chris and I are big fans of vineyards. And it’s not just for the wine. There’s something about spending a few hours of your day in an out of the way place, enjoying wine together and walking around the vines in the sunshine. I shared a few weeks back about one of our favorite (and popular) vineyards outside of Charlottesville, but this time I wanted to share with you a vineyard tucked high up in the Blue Ridge mountains.

Afton Mountain Vineyards is one of the oldest wineries on the Monticello Wine Tour. They are still producing vintages from vines established in the 1970s! They won me over when I stumbled across their slogan after doing a google search for Virginia Wines, “Grapes don’t grow in ugly places.” And they were right!

If you’re planning to go to Afton Mountain Vineyards be sure to pack a picnic lunch. We were able to pack a picnic for two by stopping by Trader Joe’s and picking up cured meats, cheeses, fruit, and a salad.

One of our favorite parts of our tasting at Afton was that we were the only ones there. It was so nice to take our time and talk to the sommelier and to learn more about the history and owners. Shortly after our tasting we were joined by other guests, but there is so much space to spread out that our picnic lunch still felt intimate.

I think we need to plan another picnic for this summer - any suggestions for a picnic in the New York City/New Jersey area? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
