Sam's Dinosaur Room Makeover (Before and After)

Dinosaur Room

Wow. Has it been a long time since I've posted here. Life has changed a lot in the last two years and especially recently, I find myself home more than ever (with my two year old, Sam), traveling less, and no longer shooting outfits for the blog (which was so fun when I did - but it's just not my life anymore).

Chris and I bought a home at the end of 2018 (after 7 years of being in a one bedroom apartment), and bit by bit we've started to transform the rooms, mostly with just a bucket of paint and used furniture but it's shaping into a space we love. The most recent room makeover was Sam's room, although it's still a work in progress.

The before pictures of Sam's room are from before we bought the home - I didn't take any pictures of his room before we painted and decorated - trust me it was sad looking!

The room had a green (pretty badly stained carpet and faded green walls - the pictures don't do it justice. :)

Instead of ripping up the carpet, we were able to have Stanley Steemer clean it - and they did an amazing job. I included below a before and after of a mystery stain that greeted you at his door. It's now nonexistent! Thanks to my sister-in-law for the recommendation of Stanley Steemer. It was affordable and they did 3 carpets in our home in under an hour.

BEFORE

AFTER

Now for the room makeover. Since Sam has only the one window and a small lamp in his room (with no overhead lights, and a green carpet, white paint seemed an obvious choice. We're loyal to Benjamin Moore - it goes on so smooth and the coverage is great - we used Super White with a Pearl Finish. If you're local to Morris County, NJ - we got our paint from Sacks Paint and Wallpaper - they're so nice over there and so sweet to Sam whenever we go. His room is definitely still a work in progress - I'd like to style his book shelf with some dinosaur book ends, and add artwork above his dresser, and purchase a floor lamp (I also need to install a window guard since his window is floor to ceiling). I'd love to hear any other ideas to complete the space as well!

All items used to decorate his room (including the artwork) are linked and described below!

Dinosaur Room

The Artwork

At first I had a hard time finding pre-made dinosaur prints that were right for Sam's age and beyond. I wasn't looking for nursery style prints since Sam is already two - I wanted to design a room for Sam that he wouldn't outgrow too fast and I found these prints from a seller on Etsy. They were just right and Sam loves them.

The prints were a digital download so I had them printed through www.canva.com and I bought poster frames from Walmart.

Dresser

We found Sam's dresser - practically brand new on Facebook marketplace for $50. I think it's originally from Buy Buy Baby - but here's a link to something similar.

Sound Machine

This sound machine has been a life saver - our house backs onto a busy road so it helps to blend out the sounds of the highway.

Window Treatments

Sam's curtains are from Target - they're backtab blackout curtains and I hung them on an Umbra Twilight Double Curtain Rod. Sam's pretty sensitive to light coming into his room (aka waking up way earlier than we want him too!) so I try to black it out as much as possible. I use one layer of white blackout curtains behind his gray ones (I think they're just basic Walmart blackout curtains).

The Roman Shade is a really affordable magnetic shade from Ikea called Ringblomma (I also have these in our guest room - another work in progress). I originally purchased it thinking I would add black out liner to the back but that didn't work well at all because the magnets aren't strong enough to hold together through two layers of fabric. So these are great for privacy but not so much for blocking light.

Portable Crib - Guava Lotus Bassinet/Crib

This portable crib by Guava was supposed to be a temporary solution to having a baby in an apartment but even when we set up a regular crib in our house, Sam always refused to sleep in it. I'm pretty sure he'll be in the crib until we transition him to a big boy bed. This crib has been amazing though - it folds up easily into a backpack and it has been nice that whenever we travel he has the same place to sleep as he does at home. It can also convert to a bassinet for the early months.

Glider

This glider from Wayfair was a perfect fit for our small apartment and so comfortable for feeding Sam. I still like keeping it in his room for reading with him during the day or before bed. My only regret is that it doesn't recline but compared to other gliders on the market, I found it to be more affordable. The light gray color is out of stock currently but they have white and dark gray too.

Thanks for stopping by after all this time and if you're new - welcome! I'm really not sure what this little space on the internet is going to look like but I'm glad to share a little snapshot of our home with you!
